Claim: A viral WhatsApp video claims Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has converted to Christianity
Full Text
In May 2026, a viral post accompanied by a video began circulating across multiple social media platforms, especially WhatsApp, claiming that Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had changed his religion from Islam to Christianity.
The post reads in part:
“This is marvellous indeed, and you think God will forget His own? Not at all, He will surely heal the land and do wonders in our lives. You can imagine how the President of our nation, a Muslim, humbled himself and surrendered to Jesus Christ. So, let’s join our faith with his and let the fire keep on burning… This is indeed very credible.”
The attached eight-minute, five-second video claimed that Tinubu attended an open-air crusade allegedly organised by the Zion Prayer Movement Outreach.

The video showed a large congregation in a crusade-like setting, followed by a graphic depicting Evangelist Ebuka Obi laying hands on Tinubu as he knelt. The narrator claimed that the President humbled himself and requested prayers.
The video was marked as “Forwarded many times” on WhatsApp and also circulated widely on other social media platforms, including Facebook.
Given the sensitive nature of religion in Nigeria and the potential for misinformation to trigger communal tension or create false expectations among religious groups, we conducted this fact-check.
Verification
From a narrative standpoint, there is a noticeable discordance: the video describes Tinubu in a white Agbada, yet the garment he actually wears tells a different story.
We analysed a keyframe from the video using Hive Moderation, an AI detection tool. The analysis indicated a 72 per cent likelihood that the visual content was AI-generated, a 98.7 per cent likelihood of AI-generated speech, and an 82.9 per cent probability that the video contained deepfake elements.

Furthermore, the alleged conversion of President Tinubu, whose Muslim faith is a well-known aspect of both his personal identity and political career, would have attracted extensive coverage from reputable national and international media organisations. However, no such report exists.
Tinubu has consistently maintained that he is a Muslim.
Moreover, the video falls short of any genuine pluralism—no mainstream media outlet published a story of such significance. Instead, the narrative appears carefully constructed to soothe the sentiments of a particular religious bloc and quietly steer their perception.
There has also been no announcement from the State House or President Tinubu’s Official X handle regarding a change in his faith.
Further checks on Evangelist Ebuka Obi’s official social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram showed no such encounter with Tinubu on a crusade ground.
A keyframe analysis using Google Reverse Image Search traced the video source to a TikTok account, Internet Secrets, known for publishing AI-generated religious and political disinformation.Screenshot of the TikTok page’s profile, showing multiple pieces of AI-generated content.

The video was posted on 3 May 2026 with the caption:
“How BOLA AHMED TINUBU Knelt Down And Asked Evang. EBUKA OBI To Pray For Him At Zion Prayer Movement Outreach.”Notably, our findings are further supported by the fact that the video was labelled as “AI-generated media”.
Conclusion
The claim that Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has converted to Christianity is FALSE.
The viral video is a deepfake containing AI-generated visuals and synthetic audio designed to mislead viewers.
