As social media users continue to express support for or opposition to political candidates ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election, several political claims have circulated online.

On 30 September 2026, a Facebook user, Emmanuel Chibuike, shared a video showing a large crowd of people dressed in white marching through city streets while waving flags and banners.

The footage featured an overlaid banner that read: “TINUBU MUST GO! A common front to defeat Tinubu and salvage Nigeria.”

The post is accompanied by this caption: “A LARGE CROWD TAKES TO THE STREETS! A large gathering is seen in a public demonstration, with banners and messages expressing opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The video captures the scale and atmosphere of the gathering. Is this a sign of growing public opposition?”

As of 11 October 2026, the post had attracted more than 1,100 reactions, 63 comments and 158 shares.

The claim was also found on Facebook here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Given the potential of the claim to mislead the public about political developments, we fact-checked the video.

Verification

We extracted a keyframe from the video and conducted reverse-image searches to establish its origin. The searches revealed that the footage was recorded in Kano State during a pro-government rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

A keyword search further revealed that Bashir Ahmad, a former digital communications aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, shared the original, unedited video on 5 September 2026.

The original footage was also found here with a caption – “Kano State stands with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. End of discussion!”

The clip captured APC faithful and local supporters taking part in a solidarity walk across Kano to demonstrate backing for President Tinubu’s administration ahead of party mobilisation events.

We observed that the “Tinubu Must Go!” graphic and protest banners were digitally superimposed onto the top and bottom of the video. Also, the street sounds and solidarity chants in the original video were replaced or overlaid with anti-government commentary and chants to mislead viewers into believing the crowd had mobilised in opposition to the federal government.

Conclusion

The claim that the video shows a public demonstration against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is misleading. The footage captures a pro-government solidarity rally held by APC supporters in Kano, which was digitally altered with anti-Tinubu graphics and text to misrepresent the event.
