No Evidence Wike Threatened Tinubu in Alleged Viral Statement Circulating on Facebook

Chinemere Chukwu3 hours ago04 mins

A Facebook user, Ofoegbu Ejike, has shared a post claiming that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, allegedly made a controversial statement accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of ignoring his role in the 2023 presidential election victory.

According to the post, Wike was quoted as saying:

“Do Tinubu understand that I killed people just to make sure he becomes president? Does he understand I spent Rivers’ ₦1 trillion budget to finance his campaign? A lot will be made open if he pushes me away from my work. I won’t go down easily.”

The post has gained some traction on Facebook, recording about 10 shares at the time of this report. The same claim was also circulated by the Facebook pages of Igbo Times Magazine and Aso Villa, further increasing its reach and making it appear credible to unsuspecting readers.

Nyesom Wike is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). According to Wikipedia, he was born on 13 December 1967 in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State. He studied at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology and later obtained a law degree from the University of Abuja.

Wike rose to prominence after serving as Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area and later became Minister of State for Education under former President Goodluck Jonathan. He was elected Governor of Rivers State in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, serving until 2023. Following the 2023 elections, he was appointed FCT Minister by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Verification and Findings

A careful review of credible Nigerian media platforms, including major national newspapers and reputable online news outlets, shows that no verified media organisation has reported such a statement as coming from Nyesom Wike.

The alleged quote is highly inflammatory and contains serious accusations, including claims of murder and misuse of public funds. Statements of this nature, if truly made by a sitting minister, would attract widespread media coverage, public outrage, and immediate responses from government agencies, civil society organisations, and political stakeholders.

Yet, there is no evidence of such reactions or any official statement confirming the quote.

Also, there is no credible media organisation that published this.

Additionally, no official communication from Wike’s office, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), or the Presidency has referenced the alleged statement.

Conclusion

The claim that Nyesom Wike said he “killed people” and spent Rivers State’s ₦1 trillion budget to finance President Tinubu’s campaign is unsubstantiated and not supported by credible sources.

Verdict: False

The statement attributed to the FCT Minister appears to be a fabricated quote circulating on social media, with no confirmation from reliable media outlets or official government channels.
