Claim: A viral Facebook post claims that Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, remarked that Peter Obi can bring out the fortunes of Nigeria.

As political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gather momentum, social media has been awash with claims of endorsements for potential presidential aspirants.
One such claim was shared on Facebook by a user, Amos Eshiofuneh Joshua, on 9 July 2026. The post alleged that Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest businessman, praised Peter Obi, saying he could transform Nigeria and improve its global reputation.
The post reads:
“Peter Obi can bring out the fortunes of Nigeria and make people recognise us around the world. Both in Education, Health care and most especially prudence in governance. ~ Nigerian Richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote.”

As of 20 July 2026, the post had attracted more than 1,700 reactions, 369 comments and 231 shares.
The same claim was also shared in several other Facebook posts, indicating it had gained wide circulation. It can be found here, here, here, here, here and here.
Given Dangote’s influence in Nigeria’s business and public spheres, and the political significance of such a statement, we verified the claim.
Verification
We conducted keyword searches to determine whether Dangote had ever made the purported statement endorsing Peter Obi.
Our searches found no credible evidence that Dangote made such a remark. None of Nigeria’s major news organisations, including Punch, Premium Times and Daily Trust, reported such a statement or attributed it to him.
An endorsement of a presidential candidate by Africa’s richest businessman would likely receive extensive coverage from reputable national and international media.
No such reports exist.
We also reviewed Dangote’s official X and Facebook accounts and found that Dangote Industries’ Facebook page had published a post on 12 July 2026 dismissing the endorsement as “FAKE NEWS.

Conclusion
The claim that Aliko Dangote endorsed Peter Obi by saying he could “bring out the fortunes of Nigeria” is false. Dangote’s official Facebook page publicly dismissed the quotation as “FAKE NEWS,” and no reputable media organisation has reported or attributed the remark to him.
