Claim: A viral Facebook post claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stepped down for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election to defeat President Bola Tinubu.

Full Text

As political discussions surrounding the 2027 general elections intensify, social media has become a hub for unverified claims about alliances and mergers between opposition figures.

On August 16, 2026, a Facebook user, Haruna Goroh, shared a post featuring a graphic of Atiku Abubakar, the current presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi standing side by side with their hands raised in a show of unity.

The graphic was captioned “ATIKU, STEP DOWN FOR OBI TO REMOVE TINUBU. ONE GOAL. ONE NATION. ONE FUTURE.”

The accompanying text read: “Atiku Step Down for Peter Obi to Remove Tinubu in 2027.”

As of August 21, 2026, the post had attracted more than 11,000 reactions, 2,800 comments, and 2,000 shares.

Given the high engagement and the potential for this kind of claim to mislead voters about the true state of opposition talks, we conducted this fact-check.

Verification

A keyword search on Google turned up no official announcement of Atiku Abubakar stepping down for Peter Obi, who is the presidential flag bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

We also found no credible report from any major Nigerian news organisation — including The Punch, Premium Times, and Daily Trust — confirming that such an event had taken place.

We checked Atiku’s official social media accounts on Facebook and X. We found no recent post or press release supporting the claim that Atiku has stepped down for Obi ahead of the 2027 election.

Using Hive Moderation, an AI-image detection tool, we analysed the keyframe of the graphic used to depict the claim. The result revealed that the image is 96.8 per cent AI-generated.

While the G-100’s proposed opposition summit on August 31, 2026, might bring Atiku and Obi to consult further on a united front for the 2027 election, neither Atiku Abubakar nor his political party, the ADC, has issued a statement confirming that he has officially stepped down for Peter Obi.

According to a TVC Journalists’ Hangout programme on 7 January 2026, Atiku has not withdrawn his interest in the presidency. He has previously insisted on forming a coalition to unseat the ruling party.

Conclusion

There is no evidence to support the claim that Atiku Abubakar has stepped down for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race. The image used to support the claim is AI-generated, and no official statement or credible media report validates the assertion.
