Claim
A Facebook post claims that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has agreed to become the vice-presidential candidate to Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The post, published by a Facebook user identified as OgwuTV, has gained traction with over 24 shares, 7 comments, and 115 likes at the time of this report.
Peter Obi was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections and has recently left the Labour party to join the ADC (African Democracy Congress) party.
Context
The viral post contains a video in which the narrator claims that Kwankwaso said:
“He wants Peter Obi to be the president of this country… he wants to be the number two man for the forthcoming 2027 presidential election.”
The video also includes a short clip showing Kwankwaso speaking to a crowd. The poster alleges that this clip is evidence that Kwankwaso has agreed to become Obi’s running mate.
Findings
A review of the video shows that the inserted clip of Kwankwaso’s speech is unclear and largely inaudible. Aside from hearing his name being mentioned, the rest of the statement cannot be clearly understood. There is no direct, audible mention of Peter Obi in the clip.
To verify the claim, further research was conducted using relevant keywords such as:

- “Kwankwaso becoming Obi’s vice president”
- “Kwankwaso VP 2027”
- “Kwankwaso alliance Obi”
This led to a longer video published by Central TV on YouTube, titled:
Ahead of 2027: Kwankwaso Demands Presidential or VP Slot in Any Alliance.
The viral Facebook clip was traced to about the 2:25 mark of the longer video.
In the full footage, Kwankwaso was seen addressing supporters in Hausa at his Miller Road residence in Kano. A translated version of his statement reads:
“At the national level, we are looking for a political party to align with. But it must be a party that will offer me either the presidential ticket or the vice-presidential slot.”
Verification
Nowhere in the full speech did Kwankwaso:
- Mention Peter Obi
- Mention the Labour Party or the ADC party
- Declare acceptance to be anyone’s running mate
Instead, his statement was a general political position about potential alliances, not a commitment to any specific candidate.
No credible media outlet reported that Kwankwaso agreed to become Peter Obi’s running mate. However, reputable outlets such as Daily Post and PM News reported that Kwankwaso expressed willingness to align with other political parties, provided he is offered either the presidential ticket or the vice-presidential slot.
Conclusion
The claim that Rabiu Kwankwaso has agreed to be Peter Obi’s vice-presidential candidate is FALSE and MISLEADING.
Kwankwaso did not endorse Peter Obi, nor did he declare himself Obi’s running mate. His statement was taken out of context and misrepresented.
