A Facebook post made by legit.com on July 8th 2026, is claiming that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has quietly abandoned his presidential ambition to lead Nigeria in 2027 and is now positioning himself behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the newly formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The post claims that Obi has abandoned his presidential ambition for 2027, and he is now fighting to be Abubakar Atiku’s Vice presidential candidate.
The post as of the time of fact-check, had gathered 1.4k comments, 642 likes and 43 shares on Facebook. The claim also states that Daniel Bwala made this statement while responding to questions on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

The post caught our attention when we saw its caption. This is because, as of the last check, Peter Gregory Obi was the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC)
So we decided to dig into the post. We first went to do a Google search, and these are the results we got.
The first two results on this page are from legit.com and Facebook.
Other results have no bearing on the claim.
Furthermore, we checked the claim that there was an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today where Daniel Bwala, the spokesperson for the president, made such a claim. However, we couldn’t find such a video on Channels TV; rather, we found an interview on Symphoni TV, where Daniel Bwala spoke on issues bothering the forthcoming election and how Peter Obi and Kwankwaso were considered as noisemakers, and a publication on metro daily newspaper website that closely relates to the claim.

Verdict – Misleading
The conclusion on this claim is that it is a fake post that is geared towards creating confusion and causing tension. It also may aim at driving traffic towards the Facebook page that made this post. The reasons are as follows: First, Peter left ADC for NDC in May this year. There can’t be conversations about him succumbing to Atiku’s Vice presidential candidate. Also, Obi left ADC in order to get a presidential ticket at the NDC; he couldn’t, after getting the ticket, cross-carpet again just to become a VP.
Moreso, there are no videos to support this claim on Channels TV.
Therefore, the post is misleading and fictional
