Claim: A viral Facebook post claims that Peter Obi appeared live on CNN and exposed President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.

Full Text

As political manoeuvring intensifies ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, social media platforms have been flooded with recycled content and manipulated media involving prominent political figures.

On February 19, 2026, a Facebook page, Igbo Bu Eze, shared a post, featuring what appeared to be an interview between Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and CNN anchor, Zain Asher.

The graphic accompanying the post claimed that Obi had “exposed” President Bola Tinubu.

The headline on the image read:
“NIGERIA 2027 ELECTIONS: PETER OBI LIVE ON CNN, EXPOSES TINUBU.”

The post was captioned:
“Peter Obi’s CNN interview. He is the best man with the solution to the problems of Nigeria—Igbo Bu Eze—Peter Obi President 2027.”

As of April 27, 2026, the post had generated over 18,000 reactions, 2,400 comments, and 3,300 shares.

Given its potential to mislead the public and distort perceptions of international media coverage of Nigerian politics, we investigated the claim.

Verification

A reverse image search of the lower section of the graphic traced the footage to an interview granted by Peter Obi to Zain Asher on CNN in September 2022, during the lead-up to the 2023 general elections.

In that interview, Obi discussed his economic plans for Nigeria. There was no mention of Bola Tinubu.

Further checks of CNN’s official reports and broadcasts show no record of any recent interview in which Obi made such claims.

Analysis of the viral post shows that:

  • A screenshot from the 2022 interview was reused
  • A new headline was digitally overlaid onto the image
  • The font style and alignment do not match CNN’s standard broadcast graphics
  • The “NIGERIA 2027 ELECTIONS” banner is fabricated and not part of the original footage

Screenshots of the post’s footage compared with the original video.

Additionally, checks on Obi’s official X and Facebook accounts show no announcement of any recent CNN appearance.

Conclusion

The claim that Peter Obi appeared on CNN and exposed Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections is misleading. The viral post recycles footage from a 2022 CNN interview and overlays it with fabricated graphics and headlines to create a false narrative.
