Social media users have continued to circulate claims linking prominent political figures to public endorsements they may not have made ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

One such claim was shared by a Facebook page, Atiku Is For The People – 2027, on 25 August 2026. The post claimed that Sowore had publicly aligned himself with Atiku Abubakar and endorsed him as the “perfect candidate” for the 2027 presidency.

The post reads in part: “#ATIKU2027: MAJOR VICTORY!!! Human Rights Activist, Omoyele Sowore, ‘Endorses’ Atiku Abubakar As The Perfect Candidate For The 2027 Presidency…”

It further claims that Sowore supported Atiku’s position on restoring the fuel subsidy and criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the removal of the subsidy.

The post had attracted 4,800 reactions, 431 comments and 585 shares as at the time of writing this report.

Given the personalities involved and the sensitivity of the political issue, we fact-checked the claim.

Verification

We conducted a keyword search on Google to determine whether Sowore had publicly endorsed Atiku Abubakar or described him as the “perfect candidate” for Nigeria’s 2027 presidency.

The result showed no publicly available evidence, either from the personalities involved or credible media organisations, to back the claim.

Instead, Sowore had earlier announced his intention to contest in the 2027 presidential election and said preparations were under the African Action Congress (AAC) party.

Reports show that he emerged as the party’s presidential candidate in May 2026 after the party’s presidential primary in Abuja.

More recently, he was identified as the AAC presidential candidate at the signing of the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 elections.

We checked Sowore’s social media accounts on X and Facebook and found no statement or post of him publicly endorsing Atiku’s presidency ahead of the 2027 election.

Meanwhile, Sowore’s position on fuel subsidy removal predates Atiku’s recent promise to restore the subsidy if elected president in 2027. Sowore’s position represents his own campaign promise, not an endorsement of Atiku.

The source of the claim is a Facebook page dedicated to promoting Atiku’s candidacy with several posts showcasing him as the “best” person to rule Nigeria. False endorsement is a disinformation tactic used during electoral cycles. Some days ago, we fact-checked a fake post stating that Atiku has endorsed Peter Obi for the 2027 presidential race.

Conclusion

The claim that Sowore endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the “perfect candidate” for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election is false. There is no available information from the personalities involved and media organisations to back the claim.
